This offers us a unique window into areas where we can make a difference to the communities in which we work. We therefore have a multi-tiered approach to social responsibility and as such, our involvement in these communities is diverse:
Our business commitments:
- We are currently working to reduce deforestation in Madagascar by organising the supply of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) stoves to communities and markets, which decreases the country's dependency on coal.
- We are working with a company who is developing a bio-ethanol plant in Mozambique and have signed an agreement to lift this product.
- Mocoh adheres to all new environmentally sensitive legislative requirements when chartering vessels for the transportation of our cargoes.
- Mocoh provides full training for our local staff and gives them the opportunity to travel within the geographical areas covered by Mocoh. Most commonly this involves placing them with a European business centre in order to give them hands-on experience of working in an international market and the skills required to understand the inner workings of the energy industry.
- As part of Mocoh’s commitment to developing sustainable energy projects, we are signing an agreement to market ethanol (a common bio-fuel) in conjunction with our normal day to day activity.
- We have a commitment to forming Mocoh Renewables, a subsidiary of The Mocoh Group which aims to develop alternative energy sources.
- Project Lilas – The construction of an infant school in Andranonahoatra, Madagascar “Project Lilas” was completed in November 2009. The children have been happily using the school since this time.
- Nazareth House – In 2004 Mocoh purchased a property in Cape Town, to provide a community home for eight disadvantaged youths between the ages of 6 and 10.
- Hospital Project - Mocoh is currently working with a Korean company and the Madagascan Ministry of Health to assist in financing and development of a 400-bed hospital in Madagascar. It is through our work in Madagascar that we identified the need for safe, modern healthcare facilities in the country. Our contacts, knowledge and commitment to servicing the community helped us to initiate this project.
Our charitable donations:
- Mocoh donates a percentage of net profits to charitable organisations whose work directly impacts the communities in which we work.
- Mocoh supplies clothing to underprivileged communities in Africa.
- Mocoh gives educational equipment to schools, such as computers, school books, text books and sports equipment.
